Route 607 Project Begins!

Motorists should stay alert for new traffic pattern, expect delays during morning commute


CULPEPER — The Virginia Department of Transportation plans to shift traffic on Route 607 (Matthew Mill Road) between Route 670 (Preddy Creek Road) and Route 29 (Seminole Trail) in Greene County as construction begins on the intersection improvement project.


The traffic shift will occur on Feb. 16 between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. Motorists should expect delays and use caution approaching the area while crews paint new pavement markings. Beginning Friday and for the next few months, early morning commuters should plan extra travel time during this phase of construction.


The road will be reduced to two lanes while crews work in the existing eastbound lane. All westbound traffic will shift right to use the current right-turn lane and eastbound traffic will travel in what is presently the westbound through lane.


Message boards are in place to notify the public.


Under a $1.7 million construction contract, VDOT contractor Fielder’s Choice Enterprises, Inc. of Charlottesville will improve Route 607 to five lanes where it meets Route 29. The widening will provide an eastbound left-turn lane into the Sheetz service center and an additional westbound left-turn lane onto Route 29 south. The project’s fixed completion date is Sept. 6.
